How to Keep Your HVAC Employees on Task

Employees who get distracted easily or just can’t stay on track can outright ruin your HVAC business. They can put you behind schedule, anger your customers, and what’s worse, even eat into your profits if you’re not careful.

Fortunately, we’ve streamlined thousands of service and repair businesses, and we’ve got a pretty good handle on how to keep less-than-focused employees in line. Give these handy methods a try, and start keeping your team on track today.

Give Them the Right Tools

In the HVAC world, there’s a lot more to a job than just being on time. Your employees have to create custom quotes, order parts, interface with clients, make repairs and produce invoices – all on the fly. If you want to make sure employees stay on task, then you need to make these steps as painless as possible.

Invest in tools and HVAC software that can streamline each part of your process, and make sure these tools work on mobile phones, too. You want your team to be productive no matter where they are.

Keep in Contact

No one wants to disappoint their boss – especially the ones signing their paycheck – so commit to checking in with your employees throughout the day. Now, don’t go crazy and call them every hour (that will only eat into their productivity), but make it a point to call once or twice for a status update.

Over time, they’ll learn to expect this, and they’ll start to manage their time better, be more productive and stay on track.

Motivate Them

Motivation is the key to keeping your team on task, so have a system in place that provides it. In the HVAC world, progressive scheduling is a great place to start. Instead of lining up a whole day of jobs for each of your employees, tell them that they’ll get a new assignment once their first one is finished.

This motivates them to get the job done efficiently and on time, so they can move onto the next job (and make more money!).

The truth is, there’s no sure-fire way to keep your team productive, but these are a great place to start. Stay in contact, give them the right tools, and keep them motivated, and you’ll be well on your way to HVAC success!
